Marking World Health Day, Merck Foundation in collaboration with African First Ladies called on doctors across the continent to apply for scholarships for new specialties.
According to the health foundation, this collaboration has to date offered one to two years specialty scholarships to improve access to quality health care in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
In a statement released on Wednesday states that over 1 100 doctors in various fields from 42 countries have benefited from the funding.
Speaking during the commemoration of World Health Day, chief executive officer of Merck Foundation, Dr. Rasha Kelej said they invite applications from African and Asian doctors from under-served communities for these scholarships.
“In line with our vision to strengthen the public healthcare system in Africa, Asia, and developing countries. I am very proud to announce that Merck Foundation have widened the horizons by introducing scholarships for young local doctors in many new underserved specialties including.”
Aimed at providing access to quality and equitable healthcare solutions, Kelej added that the foundation believes every patient deserves the best of specialised treatment.
“Thus, we at Merck Foundation strongly believe that building professional healthcare capacity is the best strategy to improve access to quality and equitable healthcare solutions for patients in underserved communities.”
Additionally, the foundation provides medical training to doctors from 42 countries in various specialities.
