Message from Dr. Rasha Kelej expressing solidarity with Sudan over devastating floods

We, at Merck Foundation, stand in solidarity with the people of Sudan, where the flooding has affected more than 500,000 people and over 100,000 houses across the country have collapsed. We pray for a speedy recovery of the injured and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families who lost to the floods. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sudan in these challenging times. #SudanCan overcome all challenges as usual. 

Furthermore, this gives me an opportunity to share with you the role Merck Foundation is playing in Sudan as a response to COVID 19 pandemic. Merck Foundation in partnership with Sudanese medical societies enrolled 11 doctors from Sudan for the One-year Online Diploma from South Wales University, UK in the many medical specialties. This online medical education strategy was adopted to improve access to quality and equitable healthcare solutions in Sudan especially during these difficult times of the Coronavirus pandemic and the floods.

Details on enrollment in Sudan with their respective medical specialties are as follows:

  • In partnership with Endocrinology Society of Sudan, we enrolled doctors for the One-year Online PG Diploma in Endocrinology

  • In partnership with Sudanese Diabetes Association, we enrolled 5 doctors for the One-year Online PG Diploma in Diabetes.

  • In partnership with Sudan Human Reproduction & Embryology Society, we enrolled 4 doctors for the One-year Online PG Diploma in Sexual and Reproductive Medicines:

2.Dr. Khalid Kamal Rahmtulla Mohamed
3.Dr. Abdelmahmoud Eltahir Mohammedelhassan  
4.Dr. Elsheikh Eltayeb Omer Karrar

Merck Foundation together with its partners commits to enroll more doctors for these and more specialty training to be able to build a strong platform of health experts in Sudan.

Last but not least, I am proud to share with you that Merck Foundation has benefited more than 1000 doctors from 35 countries such as Bangladesh, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Gabon, Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Liberia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Mauritius, Namibia, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, UAE, and Mozambique.

We are planning to scale up this program to Latin American countries in the near future.
