ESTHER LUNGU, The First Lady of the Republic of \nZambia and Senator, Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>African First Ladies of Angola, Botswana, Burkina Faso, \nBurundi, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, \nGuinea Conakry, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, and Namibia were the Guests\n of Honour for the Luminary.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>More than 75,000 participants, healthcare providers, policymakers, and academia from 70 countries attended the Luminary.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p><strong>\u200b<br>\nMerck Foundation<\/strong>, the philanthropic arm of Merck KgaA kickstarted the <strong>8th Edition of \u201cMerck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary\u201d<\/strong> on <strong>27th April 2021<\/strong>, through an online videoconference. It was co-chaired by <strong>H.E. Mrs ESTHER LUNGU, The First Lady of the Republic of Zambia<\/strong> and <strong>Senator, Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation.<\/strong><\/p><p>During his keynote speech, while inaugurating the conference, <strong>The President of Zambia, H.E Dr. EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU<\/strong>\n emphasized, \u201cI am very glad to be hosting this important conference \ntogether with Merck Foundation, our long term strategic partner. It is a\n great honor to inaugurate the conference alongside the First Ladies of \nAfrica. Also, I am delighted to have my dear \nsisters, The First Ladies of Africa at this conference.\u201d<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>Merck Foundation CEO, Senator, Dr. Rasha Kelej<\/strong> emphasized, \u201cWe welcomed <strong>The First Ladies of 13 African Countries<\/strong>, who are also the <strong>Ambassadors of Merck Foundation More than a Mother,<\/strong>\n to this important conference. Together, we have worked closely \nthroughout the years on a strong strategy to build healthcare capacity \nby providing specialized training in various specialties; and define \ninterventions to break infertility stigma and support girls\u2019 education.<\/p><p>I am very proud that we have so far provided for more than 1100 \nDoctors from 42 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America with \none &amp; two-, three-year specialty training in multiple fields such as\n Oncology, Diabetes, Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine, \nEndocrinology, Sexual and Reproductive Medicine, Acute Medicine, \nRespiratory Medicine, Human Assisted Reproduction and Embryology &amp; \nFertility specialty, to be the first in their countries.
