There will always be people who know something we do not know, experiences we have not had, and perspectives that can make us better leaders.

Humility keeps us open. It keeps us learning. It allows us to listen, evolve, acknowledge mistakes, and appreciate the contribution of others.

But throughout my leadership journey, I have also learned something else:

Humility should never require you to make yourself smaller.

And perhaps even more importantly, not everyone interprets humility in the same way.

Some people see a humble leader and recognize confidence without arrogance. They appreciate accessibility, simplicity, and the willingness to listen.

Others may interpret the same behavior very differently.

They may mistake humility for weakness or incompetence.

They may mistake accessibility for lack of authority.

They may mistake kindness for permission to cross boundaries. We meet people think this way every now and then.

And sometimes, if you continuously minimize your own achievements, they will be very happy to believe you.

You Do Not Have to Downplay What You Have Built

I have always believed that a leader should give credit to others. Success is rarely created by one person, and recognizing your team, your partners, and everyone who contributes is an important part of leadership.

But giving credit to others does not mean denying your own contribution.

There is nothing arrogant about knowing what you have achieved.

There is nothing wrong with appreciating the years of work, difficult decisions, persistence, sacrifices, courage, experience, and discipline behind your success.

And there is certainly nothing wrong with correcting someone who attempts to deliberately underestimate it.

Self-awareness works in both directions.

We should be aware of our weaknesses, but we should also be aware of our strengths.

We should recognize where we need to improve, but we should also recognize where we excel.

We should be capable of saying, “I could have done this better.”

But we should equally be capable of saying, “I did this exceptionally well.”

That is not arrogance.

That is accuracy.

Some People Need to See Your Boundaries

Leadership requires emotional intelligence, and emotional intelligence includes understanding who is standing in front of you.

I do not believe that every person, every situation, or every environment requires exactly the same leadership response.

With people who respect you, humility can strengthen relationships.

With people who genuinely want to learn from you or collaborate with you, openness can create trust ; but within your guidelines of collaborating.

But when someone repeatedly attempts to underestimate you, diminish your work, challenge your credibility without basis, or treat your accessibility as weakness, excessive humility can become counterproductive.

In those situations, a leader sometimes needs to stand taller.

Not aggressively.

Not arrogantly.

Not emotionally.

But unmistakably.

You may need to remind people—sometimes without saying very much at all—of your experience, your achievements, your standards, and your position.

You may need to stop explaining yourself unnecessarily.

You may need to become less accessible.

You may need to establish clearer boundaries.

And sometimes, you simply need to stop participating in conversations in which your value is constantly being negotiated.

Protecting Your Image Is Part of Leadership

Some people feel uncomfortable discussing a leader’s image or charisma, as though these things are superficial.

I disagree.

Leadership is certainly not only about image. Substance must always come first.

But leadership is also about perception.

How you communicate, how you carry yourself, what you tolerate, how you respond under pressure, how you present your achievements, and how you allow others to treat you all contribute to the way your leadership is perceived.

I have always paid attention to my image—not because I believe appearance or status can replace substance, but because presentation should reflect substance rather than undermine it.

The same applies to leadership presence.

If you have spent years building credibility, expertise, impact, and a strong reputation, you should not casually allow someone else to redefine their value.

Your work should speak for itself.

But sometimes you also need to make sure people are listening.

Charisma Also Requires Self-Respect

Leadership charisma does not come from constantly reminding everyone how important you are.

In fact, genuine charisma usually requires very little announcement.

It comes from certainty.

From knowing who you are.

From knowing what you bring to the table.

From not desperately seeking validation.

And from not becoming smaller simply to make somebody else more comfortable.

There is something powerful about a leader who can be warm without becoming weak, confident without becoming arrogant, accessible without losing authority, and humble without surrendering self-respect.

That balance is not always easy.

I continue to fine-tune it myself.

Humility Should Come From Strength, Not Submission

For me, the most powerful form of humility is chosen humility.

I can acknowledge someone else’s brilliance without questioning my own.

I can celebrate another person’s success without diminishing mine.

I can listen to criticism without automatically accepting every criticism as truth.

I can admit what I do not know without forgetting everything that experience has taught me.

And I can treat everyone with respect without allowing everyone unlimited access to me or permission to disrespect me.

Perhaps this is the distinction leaders need to remember:

Humility is knowing that you are not better than everyone else.

Self-respect is knowing that no one has the right to make you believe you are less than you are.

A strong leader needs both.

Be humble enough to keep learning.

Be generous enough to share credit.

Be secure enough to acknowledge your mistakes.

But also be confident enough to recognize your achievements, courageous enough to defend the value of your work, and wise enough to know when humility is being respected—and when it is being exploited.

You do not protect your leadership presence by pretending to be more important than you are.

You protect it by refusing to pretend that you are less.

Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej

CEO of Merck Foundation.

Why leaders must know when to be humble, when to stand tall, and when to protect the value of what they have built I believe in humility.
